Trucking and haulage companies: records AI developers may want to license

Trucking and haulage companies move freight with their own trucks and drivers. Carrier software can tie dispatch to billing, driver pay, fuel and maintenance, so years of loads, settlements and claims can sit in one system. Some AI developers pay for company records that show how real work gets done, step by step.

Records a trucking company may hold

Usually yours to decide on

These can still contain other parties' details: see Held for others.

  • Dispatch and load recordsLoads, trips planned and the changes along the way.
  • Settlements and invoicesWhat each load paid and what was paid out.
  • Maintenance and claimsMaintenance history and claims files, with how each was handled.

Held for others

These may need the other party's consent, or may have to come out before anything is shared.

  • Customers' shipment detailsIn the US, motor carriers may not disclose a shipment's nature, quantity, destination, consignee or routing without consent where it could harm the shipper or reveal its business to a competitor (49 U.S.C. 14908).
  • Driver files and testing recordsIn the US, drug and alcohol testing records can only be released with the driver's specific written consent (49 CFR 382.405).

What a trucking company should check before saying yes

Customer contracts

Customer contracts may limit how records about their freight are shared, even after names are removed.

Telematics terms

Some telematics providers keep rights in aggregated or de-identified versions of your data, and some can delete data as soon as a subscription isn't renewed. Export what you need while it is live.

How personal details come out

In the US, ELD data has to be kept in a way that protects driver privacy (FMCSA). Ask the firm how driver details, names and contact details are removed before anything is shared. De-identification explained sets out what to ask.

The terms of any offer

Read what you would be agreeing to, and get your own legal advice before you sign. Once data is used to train a model, it can't practically be pulled back out.

How it works

Fill in a short form and we reply by email within two business days. If it looks like a fit, we introduce you to a firm that represents owners in these deals and email you its name. The firm pays us a referral fee if you sign. See all three steps.

Questions owners ask

Can driver files or camera footage be included?

Plan on leaving them out. In the US, drug and alcohol testing records can only be released with the driver's specific written consent (49 CFR 382.405), and driver-facing cameras have led to claims under Illinois biometric privacy law (BIPA).

What happens to our telematics data if we cancel?

It depends on the provider's terms. Some can delete data as soon as a subscription isn't renewed, so export what you need while it is live.

Do I have to pay anything?

No. If you sign with the firm we introduce you to, it pays us a referral fee out of its own share, so it doesn't reduce what your company is paid. You never pay Insightlanes.com anything.
