Short answer
Samsara lets you download reports as CSV files from the dashboard, or pull data through its API with a token that has read permissions. Check your data retention settings first: data older than each setting is deleted every night, and shortening a setting deletes older data for good. Samsara's terms say you own your data and can export it during your contract, but data may be deleted immediately if your license ends without renewal.
At a glance
- What you can export
- ELD data, driver hours-of-service logs, HOS violations, unassigned HOS, driver and vehicle information, DVIRs, IFTA, safety data and scores, video retrievals, driver documents, driver mileage benchmarks
- Formats
- CSV from the dashboard; API
- Who can export by API
- Anyone with an API token that has read permissions for that data

You don't need to export anything to get started
To find out whether your records may be worth a closer look, your team size and years in business are enough. This guide is for seeing what Samsara holds and keeping a copy, especially before you change systems or cancel. How far back your Samsara data goes
Samsara keeps each type of data for a set retention period, and you can see each one under Settings > Data Retention. Data outside its retention period is purged every night at midnight UTC.
Be careful with these settings. Samsara says that any change to a custom retention policy deletes data older than the new period, and "You cannot undo the deletion." Setting a longer period later does not bring deleted data back. To change a setting, your account administrator has to send a written request to Samsara Support.
A few details from Samsara's help article:
- Camera retention applies to images, video and audio uploaded to the cloud, not to storage on the device itself.
- Summary statistics such as the Safety Score, safety trends and counts of harsh events are not deleted with camera data.
- For EU cloud customers, dash cam images and video are kept for six months by default.
Samsara's help center doesn't describe a screen that totals your records. A practical way to size your history is to run each report with the widest date range and count the rows in the CSV.
How to export your Samsara data
From the dashboard
- Open the report you want.
- Use the date selector to set the time frame.
- Open the more actions menu (...) on the report and select Download CSV.
Through the API
For larger or regular exports, use the Samsara API with an API token that has read permissions for the data you want. Samsara's published limits are 150 requests per second per token and 200 per second per organization, with stricter limits on some endpoints. If you go over a limit, the API returns a "429 Too Many Requests" response telling you how long to wait.
Samsara's terms add a caveat: some information may not be exportable through the dashboard or the API.
What Samsara's terms say about your data
Samsara's online Terms of Service (last updated June 2026) say:
- Ownership: "Customer owns all Customer Data."
- Export: "Customer may export Customer Data at any time during the term of this Agreement."
- If you don't renew: the affected Customer Data may be deleted immediately.
- Deletion on request: subject to its retention and backup policies, Samsara will delete Customer Data from its hosted software on request.
- Samsara's own rights: Samsara has a transferable, sublicensable license to use, copy, modify, display and distribute Customer Data to operate, support, improve and provide its products. This continues after the agreement ends unless the law prohibits it or you ask in writing at termination that it be limited to non-personally-identifiable data. Samsara's "Usage Data" includes anonymized, de-identified or aggregated data.
Samsara also publishes a separate version of its terms on its UK website, and your signed agreement may differ from the online version. Check your own agreement first.

Most telematics data is about drivers and vehicles, so it is full of personal details. See the trucking and haulage page for which records are usually the business's own and which are held for others.
Questions about Samsara data
Can I get back data that has passed its retention period?
No. Samsara says deleted data can't be recovered by setting a longer retention period.
What happens to my Samsara data if I cancel?
Under the online terms, data may be deleted immediately if your license ends without renewal. Export what you need before your contract ends.
Can driver files or camera footage be included?
Plan on leaving them out. In the US, drug and alcohol testing records can only be released with the driver's specific written consent (49 CFR 382.405), and driver-facing cameras have led to claims under Illinois biometric privacy law (BIPA).
Do I need to sort out my records first?
No. Start by filling in our short form with your team size and years in business. Rough numbers are fine. If you are about to cancel or switch software, export your records first: see Before you cancel or switch logistics software.
