Ship owners, operators and managers: records AI developers may want to license
Ship owners, operators and managers own, run or manage ships. The daily noon report records position, speed, weather, distance and fuel on board, and planned maintenance systems keep a life history of each piece of equipment, with defects and spare parts. Noon reports and sensor data already feed machine-learning models for vessel performance and voyage planning.

Records a ship owner, operator or manager may hold
Usually yours to decide on
These can still contain other parties' details: see Held for others.
- If you own the vesselNoon reports, maintenance histories and voyage emails. If a manager runs the vessel under SHIPMAN 2024, the form says all data relating to the vessel and its operation remains the owner's property.
- If you manage ships for othersYour own business records, subject to the confidentiality clause in your management agreement.
Held for others
These may need the other party's consent, or may have to come out before anything is shared.
- Vessel data held by managersUnder SHIPMAN 2024, vessel data is the owner's property, and the agreement and data shared under it are confidential.
- Crew and claims filesPeople claims can hold personal and sensitive data about crew members' identity, health, illness and injuries.
What a ship owner, operator or manager should check before saying yes
What your contracts say
Ship management agreements may make all data shared under them confidential, as SHIPMAN 2024 does. Check each charter party for terms on data and confidentiality.
Who controls the vessel data
Charterers get access and use rights to vessel data, not ownership. Check whether you are the owner, the manager or a charterer for each vessel.
How personal details come out
Ask the firm how crew details, names and contact details are removed before anything is shared. De-identification explained sets out what to ask.
The terms of any offer
Read what you would be agreeing to, and get your own legal advice before you sign. Once data is used to train a model, it can't practically be pulled back out.
How it works
Fill in a short form and we reply by email within two business days. If it looks like a fit, we introduce you to a firm that represents owners in these deals and email you its name. The firm pays us a referral fee if you sign. See all three steps.
Check if your data qualifies
One short form. If it looks like a fit, we introduce you to a firm that represents owners in these deals. No cost, and nothing is shared without your OK.
Check if my data qualifies →Questions owners ask
We manage ships for owners. Can we include vessel data?
Not on your own. Under SHIPMAN 2024, all data relating to the vessel and its operation remains the owner's property, so you would need the owner's agreement.
Do I need to sort out my records first?
No. Start by filling in our short form with your team size and years in business. Rough numbers are fine. If you are about to cancel or switch software, export your records first: see Before you cancel or switch logistics software.
Do I have to pay anything?
No. If you sign with the firm we introduce you to, it pays us a referral fee out of its own share, so it doesn't reduce what your company is paid. You never pay Insightlanes.com anything.
